My guess is that the White House gave very specific instructions on who they could talk to and about what topics they could talk about. The FBI, and the DOJ as a whole, is part of the executive and as such answers to the president. If the president gives them direction on something, they have to follow those directions (unless the directions are facially illegal). This whitewashing cover up is wholly Trump’s doing, not the FBI. The FBI was used as a tool of Trump’s bullshit.

So how are we protected against a President who is a criminal? Why can’t he just shut down any investigation that displeases him?
