re: #187 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Sigh… looks like I need to change my Yahoo/ATT email passwords again.

They are old email addresses, which is why I keep them. Had them since the 1990s.

I think I’ll need to transition hundreds of various web accounts to new email contacts (including here at LGF.) What a pain.

I’ll need to open some email accounts somewhere. I already have a gmail account but don’t want to use that too much.

I have a couple of Microsoft accounts. Perhaps I need to make a new couple of accounts there?

Anyone have suggestions?

One security assumption that I make is that with state level actors (ie countries spy agencies) nothing online is ‘safe’ from being ‘hacked’. There is an increasing list of countries have way more resources and expertise than any for profit company could match.

There is the old saying. If the Mossad, or any other top class intelligence agency wants to kill you, it will happen.

I guess that there are a couple of ways you can go depending upon the problem you are trying to solve.

1. If you want to avoid migrating your email accounts:

Go with an organization likely to survive and keep up with technology for the next several decades.

2. If you are concerned about being hacked by non-state groups:

Go with an organization that can offer some rational level of security. Encrypt your data. Follow other security hygiene procedures. And watch the email provider’s reputation closely. There are lots of stories about email providers that thought their security implementation was unbreakable. But it wasn’t.

One reportedly reputable email provider that I have been following is Protonmail.
proton.me

You can also probably run your own email server. Then have other services forward mail to you. With the other services deleting it from their platforms afterwards.

Of course, if it ultimately gets hacked, you would know where the blame lays.

Okay, maybe that last suggestion wasn’t too helpful.
