This is another reason I love Judaism :) Environmental, animal rights and humanitarian issues are a major part. We are commanded to care for the planet and everything on it. It’s really an extension of the major tenet of Judaism, “tikkun olam” which means “repairing the world” - to not misuse or abuse and treat all of creation with respect. In fact, we have very specific law which governs how we treat the planet and all living creatures.
I’m not a big fan of quoting Bible verse, but I do like this one (not exactly Bible verse - it’s from the commentary or what is called “Midrash”.)
“When God created the first human beings, God led them around the Garden of Eden and said: “Look at my works! See how beautiful they are—how excellent! For your sake I created them all. See to it that you do not spoil and destroy My world; for if you do, there will be no one else to repair it.” (Midrash Kohelet Rabbah, 1 on Ecclesiastes 7:13)
