Shootings such as this are never as simple as “He was black and didn’t like white people.” If it were that simple then we’d have shootings every minute from racists. Public shootings are not a one-dimensional crime, no matter what kind of statement the gunman leaves behind.

But complexity has never been a strength of True Believers. Neither has logic.

Three human beings are dead in yet another shooting. We will not be discussing gun control as a result. We will not discuss mental illness. We will just fight over the color of people’s skin until the next shooting. Which will probably be tomorrow.

I’m not a cynic, I’m a realist. This is how we operate in this country when it comes to gun violence. Any excuse not to address the real issues. I don’t care about the race of the shooter or the victims, I care about the shooter’s mental state and how they got access to a gun. The rest is pretty damn irrelevant.
