So now we’re rooting for matthews to be fired?

Well, I’m not, anyway. Whatever happened, happened in 1999 and was apparently dealt with back then.

He may be a blowhard and a lousy interviewer and a totally shameless self-promoter, but his heart usually seems to be in the right place, and without his show leading the way back in the 90s, who knows if MSNBC would ever have evolved to give us Keith and Rachel and Chris and Lawrence and Joy? And he manages to get some fairly powerful Rs to appear and face questions when they wouldn’t show up on any of the other shows later in primetime at all.
