I just heard from my idiot neighbor that his niece’s job (manager at a local chain of bowling alley/game room/restaurants called Stars and Strikes) laid off 65 of the 75 workers at her location because….OBAMACARE. Seriously? You need 75 employees to run a place and now you’re keeping the place open and running with 10 employees? Puhlease. Because of healthcare laws that haven’t taken effect yet? This must be coming from the owners because his niece says the same thing. Or they’re both lying out their asses.

My sister works for AMC and was told a couple weeks back by her manager that the head office has sent down directives that no employees can work over 30 hours a week. To which I first assumed she had to be joking, since she regularly does over 30 hours in any given week because this place has a higher-than-average turnover rate. Then when told how they intend to cover the big blanks in their schedules, namely by hiring a bunch of new people, I alternated between laughing and just shaking my head.

When she told me about this new rule, she also said she was going to be limited to 27 hours a week. But she’s also been there for close to 5 years and cross-trained in every position with plenty of experience in them. Last week, she was clocked in at over 30 hours because of needing to cover other people’s shifts.
