re: #141 A hollow Gandalfian voice says, VOTE, you fools!
If there’s a pocket of infections anywhere, we’re all at risk. So it’s in WHO’s interest to make sure any vaccine or treatment gets to everyone.
Anyway, we’ll be back in January, arrears of our dues in hand.
Excellent summary. The US can withdraw from #WHO, but must first pay what it owes, as required by US law. As of the end of April, the US owed the WHO $99,168,375.The US Cannot Withdraw from the WHO Without First Paying Its Dues https://t.co/ObBmsggYX1 via @just_security pic.twitter.com/IOsjkE3Rb4

Apparently it isn’t that easy to just leave. The US has to give one year notice (pretty common for international organizations) AND pay up the dues in arrears, which in this case is a cool $100 million. So, the US government would finally need to cough up the desperately needed money it owes the WHO to start the clock running, which the Biden administration would immediately stop.
