They were insane to let him in at all. The second he announced they should have nuked his campaign from orbit, brought up the 70’s DOJ racism in housing lawsuit and straight up labeled him persona non-grata as a white supremacist. That would have been risky and, as it happens, taken far more leadership than the cowards running the RNC are capable of mustering.

The GOP took him as a joke and, let’s be honest, most of us did. For months, we heard pundit after pundit predict that he’d plateaued and would soon be on his way out. And every time he took off in the polls again, it was by tapping into the rich veins of racism and hatred that have been the party’s foundation for decades. By the point it became obvious he was not going to flame out and go away, he’d become so dug in that to destroy him would have meant mutual annihilation. They couldn’t destroy him at this point without effectively forfeiting the election.
