I don’t think we’ll see a constitutional amendment to do away with the Electoral College, and I don’t think the Interstate Compact regarding the popular vote will gain any traction either. But I’m wondering if the system might be better if States awarded electors proportionally (with say at 10% minimum). That avoids the problem of gerrymandering that we’d see if more states did like Maine and Nebraska and awarded them by Congressional district. It also gives Democrats in Idaho or Mississippi and Republicans in California or New York a reason to vote. I’d have to play around with the numbers over the last few cycles to see how much of a difference it would make.
