Always. I have a fire extinguisher in The Beast now; and I am always abundantly cautious when I work on my cars. Of all the amateur pursuits I enjoy, mechanics is my first love; and I take care to do good work and to be safe at the same time. I don’t work on things that are outside my expertise, and I make sure I always have the right tools for the job.

My brother-in-law inherited a 1965 Ford Thunderbird from a friend of his who died last year. The fellow worked for Ford, bought the car new, parked it in his garage, and never drove it again.

My brother-in-law put new tires on the car and started driving it (then learning what happens to engine seals that haven’t been checked in half-a-century).

He now has the car at a Ford dealer, having all that stuff replaced.
