You misread me, the sequence of events is usually a string of VEI-5’s or VEI-6’s popping, eventually forming an VEI-8. Yellowstone does not go insta-VEI-8 like Lake Toba.

Agreed, but we don’t know if that is a feature or a trend. Yellowstone could pull a Toba as easily as not. These events are so random that we have no real handle on how they occur. One could hope for a warning for the Yellowstone super volcano blowing it’s lid, but there is no guaranty. That is just the nature of freak random geological events.

We really have a huge lack of solid science about deep earth processes. We know that the system is chaotic, but we have little hard information for prediction.
