I grew up in the suburbs southeast of Gary, and I also spent a lot of time up at the Dunes. I went there once in the winter; the frozen shores of Lake Michigan were striking, but trying to climb back up the frozen sand dune proved… challenging. I went to college in the open flat country to the east, near the Ohio border, and the fall colors are about the best I have to say about that.

My brother still lives in Valparaiso, the only one of six kids who stayed anywhere near Gary. The rest spread out literally from coast to coast, or in my case, to Europe..
