I think the gist of that is that what saved the auto industry was the restructuring during the managed bankruptcy, not the infusion of billions of dollars. There is a good argument to be made that without the infusion of capital the industry never would have survived to make it through a managed bankruptcy, but there is an argument that without the infusion of taxpayer dollars they would just have gotten to the bankruptcy several months sooner and got to the same point without the extra burden on the taxpayer. Who knows what would have happened, but the knee jerk “do they think we are all stupid!” just seems too echo chambery.
