I’m not sure what the takeaway from this is. It’s pointless to try democracy in a small or poor country because it’ll just get subverted anyway, therefore Chavez’s undermining of democracy is no big deal?

Democracies are not formed without ‘outside’ support. If you want the US to support your fledgling democracy, it helps if you don’t have oil, fruit, or mines.
