Most of the granite countertops sold are from manufactured granite. Quarried granite is a mite more expensive.

Many of the countertops being pushed in these reno/buying shows are too big to be real, mined granite.

As you point out, they are manufactured somehow. The tops may include granite as part of the ingredients, but the manufacturing is done by melting and pressing.

We don’t have granite out here in the mountains. Instead, our mountains are made out of diorite. While similar to granite, diorite is made from partially melted and recrystallized ocean crust, while granite proper is made from continental crust. Slightly different chemical composition, and the resulting minerals are different.
