Way I’d do it would be the first letter of the surname. So say the person’s name was Kowalski, I’d call them K-ski. My grandmother’s maiden name ends in cik but it’s pronounced chik in the old country and by our New York/New Jersey cousins as it does in our ancestral language.
My mother and sister pronounce the regular “l” and my son and I pronounce the dark l.
