One of the unfortunate side effects of Dems losing so many down ballot elections (and Brown’s return to the governor’s office in 2010 along with Fienstein deciding not to retire) is that the bench was basically empty in 2016 for the presidential election. That opened the door for Sanders to become an alternative to Clinton and thereafter a force in Democratic politics.
