There’s more to it than that given all the demagoguery even before 2008 where disagreeing with policy or actions got one labeled “anti-American” or “traitor”.

In some circles it’s acceptable to do that still- to demonize opponents and smear them. I don’t find it helpful to the discourse, but what can you do?
