What Douthat says is “It’s an assumption that cries out to be challenged by a thoughtful center-right.” He uses the rest of the paragraph to describe what he thinks is wrong with the approaches of those he sees as Michael Bloomberg’s circle. But the critical point is his use of ‘a’ instead of ‘the’ prior to the phrase “thoughtful center-right”. He believes that such a center-right is needed, but he uses the next paragraph to start making his case that it is not operational at this time. He knows that refusniks like Wayne LaPierre are the voice of the right currently, and he understands that to be a very bad thing.

Thoughtful center right exists. Our President is that (and is the best republican president since Ike) & much of the Democratic Party is too. The GOP is just that far out in Wingnuttia.

What we really need is a center left because there is no real political left, as the world understands that, in America today.
