I had a gig at a meeting of the local Green Party delegation in Germany the other week, and one of the speakers was saying that Leopard tanks that Germany recently delivered to Saudi Arabia were not designed for open-country combat missions, but rather especially equipped to serve crowd-control functions.

Which makes a lot of sense, the Saudis let the US fight their military enemies, their army is to contain their domestic political enemies.

Wait! What?

Tanks are seriously lousy at crowd control. Unless you count flattening whole city blocks as ‘crowd control.’ I don’t doubt that the Saudi government keeps a tight fist on its people, but tanks are not suitable for the task.
