But it falls flat on its face or at least fails to hit home, because what makes American Eceptionaism scary is the way that it warps the world around it on a global scale (like the invasion of Iraq) whereas Columbia is more or less a generic doomsday villain of a nation that wants to wipe out all other nations because they are sinful.

The entire “I am here from America to help…” Aspect of a giant so mighty it can not see that it crushes those it tries to comfort is far more interesting in my opinion.

True, but that aspect would be far more complex to simulate and would have exposed the game’s makers to far more hostile commentary. Many of those right-of-center, likely including me, would have treated the game as an example of ‘Blaming America First’ and dismissed it accordingly.

Moreover, there is again the matter of time setting. America was not a superpower back in 1912. Germany and the UK had larger navies than we did and many European nations had larger armies. The US could not be depicted as that kind of giant in 1912, even through the plot device of Columbia.
