Destroying priceless cultural artifacts and more than a few (thousand) heavily invested believers seems… maybe a little bit slightly heartless, even if I don’t personally subscribe to any of the region’s religions.
The sunk cost fallacy applies. If the priceless artifacts/edifices and heavily invested believers cause disruption, death and destruction, better to eliminate them than to say they’re sacrosanct.
