If by ‘ultimately won,’ you mean ‘despite having died in the process’, OK. Mandela (your example) only spent 27 years in jail. It didn’t kill him. Other people continued his work on the outside.

And the phase ’ people killed by their own’ bothers me. Can’t put my figure on why. I know that some were killed by other than the expected opposition, but ‘their own’?
