“Still”? I’m not aware of any movement away from it. English is part of the minority on this one, I think.
I consulted “The Power of Babel” by John McWhorter (one of my favorite writers) in an attempt to get a rough estimate of gendered vs. nongendered languages. I couldn’t find an answer, but I did discover that the African language of Fula has 16 genders. So you may be right.
