I guess I’m inured to a certain degree of this—actually, I spent enough of my childhood around gypsies to appreciate a good con—but the current turn has me worried. The Religious Right is looking for a permanent majority and, sorry as I am to say this, if they get it things are going to get ugly. Their particular strain of Christianity is built upon a strong authoritarian model in which a few individuals are the fast-and-loose arbitors of guilt and innocence, combining with a fetishization of the world’s end: between the two, people are going to get hurt.
