What Emerson used was a ‘ribbon controller’ - essentially a keyless keyboard that ran up and down the frequency of the Moog’s oscillators on a continuous ‘ribbon.’

Hey, that sounds just like it. Do you know if the ribbon controller could be detached and played freely in your hands, because that is what he was doing?
