The internet has a lot to do with it, I feel like. The ease in which these kinds of ideologies have been able to spread online unchecked cannot be understated, and I feel like it hooks a lot of these guys early through curiosity and shared ‘community’ and taboo. Like ‘these are the things your parents won’t really tell you!’ or bullshit like that. I’d say some alienation issues contributes too, but it doesn’t explain everything since it feels like a huge amount of these assholes are bullies in real life too, rather than the disaffected type that feel like they NEED to turn toward online for community.

Right. And then there’s the whole “not being politically correct” thing which is pretty much an excuse to be an insensitive asshole without repercussions.
