You can’t wage an entirely mobile defense in life, sooner or later you have to make a stand or you’ll just get bullied eternally. The problem for Romney is that he’s got little leverage to keep Fischer from flouncing if Fischer feels defied. If Fischer flounces, Romney is the one who loses the election. The only way to turn the tables would be for Mitt to get any ally who could win over some of Fischer’s followers.

Actually he might win over a lot of independents and maybe even some fiscally conservative Dems if he would show he had a backbone.
