re: #145 Targetpractice

It won’t go anywhere. Remember, it’s an article of faith in wingnut dogma that if you offer anything that can be construed as “amnesty,” then the “illegals” will flood in in order to take advantage of it. So if the GOP actually puts such a bill forward and there’s any indication that the DNC is considering taking it…the wingnut media will demand Trump veto it or face being lumped in with Reagan as an “amnesty” president.

I think *maybe* that’s right, but the fact that they are talking at all behind Mitch’s back is significant. They are scared, and may compromise on “Border Security”, forgoing actual wall funds and asking the Dems for other “Security” costs, like increased personnel, surveillance, and funds to humanely house, feed, and provide medical care to asylum seekers, which which the Dems will be glad to agree. The treatment of refugees and asylum seekers has hurt Senate R’s running for reelection in 2020 badly. It does not play at all well in purple suburbia.

The asylum question is huge for the R’s, because what we are doing is a direct contravention of International Law, of which we are signatories. tRump may laugh it off, but the Senate is more aware of the consequences down the road. They don’t want us to be branded as pariahs, as it will affect trade. Their masters don’t want that to happen.
