This was an unremarkable (if tragic) finding, but what really scorched a lot of people — and by “a lot of people,” I mean “liberals” — is that Pew reinforced the notion that this division in American life is roughly symmetrical. That is, it’s happening on both sides, with left and right each deserting the center.

The weakness in his piece is that he doesn’t mention anyone specific, so it’s impossible to see what their arguments really were.
