I don’t think you’re following my point. FDR was willing to ignore African Americans to get Social Security. I’m glad we have Social Security FWIW and I understand fully the importance of pragmatism but holding up FDR as a political deity and deeming modern Democrats sell-outs because they’re not for universal and single payer is the problem. Jim Crow was also on a state level. Discrimination existed in the North but it was more informal. Not saying it was right of course but that’s not why FDR did it. FDR did it because he needed the Southerners. A pure political move.

And if he didn’t get the Southerners he wouldn’t get Social Security either. Sometimes you get pure political moves in politics. /s (“I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on here!”)

Pragmatism in politics often sucks, especially when it involves people’s rights. However, Social Security has only expanded since it was adopted.

I’m all for raising the maximum income cap next (which was also adopted to get the rich in the North on board, and that was politics too).
