re: #150 Dr Lizardo

That was one hell of a wild time in Hollywood, from what I’ve read. The late 1970s/early ’80s was the sunset of the auteur film-makers; Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate killed that off. And then with the rise of film-makers like Spielberg and Lucas, making films that were consistently ultra-high-grossing flicks, Hollywood realized that little films weren’t gonna cut the mustard and they moved to the high-profile summer release tent-pole films we’re so familiar with today.

The other big chance of the early 80s was the establishment of the PG-13 rating, which Hollywood initially chafed under because they’d been playing fast and loose with the indistinct line between PG and R since the establishment of ratings. Then they realized just how nebulous the line between PG-13 and R is and have been dancing on it ever since. Hence why none of the big R-rated films of the 80s could ever get made today, and why their “remakes/reboots” today seem so damned tame by comparison.
