Apparently there was a kerfuffle on FB about the racial makeup of a young woman named “Ivory Bangle Lady” buried in York in the 4th century. Yorkshire Museum basically tells people that Roman Britons were quite diverse and “put a sock in it.”
Regarding the negative comments about this blog on Facebook:
Let’s be clear, Roman Britain & Roman York, were diverse places with people from all over the empire mixing together. ‘Romans’ were not all white, male soldiers.
Anyone who suggests otherwise is factually incorrect. https://t.co/h4dxxt8b8y— Yorkshire Museum (@YorkshireMuseum) October 23, 2020
The blog in the second tweet is definitely worth a read. “Ivory Bangle Lady” was obviously of high status given the jewelry she was buried with (and that she had a stone coffin). And it’s possible that she was an emigrant to Britain from North Africa.
