My brother still lives in Valparaiso, the only one of six kids who stayed anywhere near Gary. The rest spread out literally from coast to coast, or in my case, to Europe..

Ah, yes, that was the nearest “large” town to us. We lived out in the country to the southwest, between Valpo and Crown Point/Merrillville. My parents moved out in 2005 to build their dream house closer to where they lived as kids; the guy who bought our house wound up burning it down for the insurance money, so my longtime childhood home now no longer exists.
