When we took our summer holidays, my dad always insisted on driving till late at night and we’d stay in a cheap ass motel (my dad said he wanted to give the small business people his support. Yeah right).

The restaurants were closed so we’d each be given some coins to hit the vending machines.

There must have been a company that bought out the entire stock of ten year old, expired cans of Spanish grapefruit juice.

Yup, that’s what we had.

We did the mega road trip every other summer to see grandma, grandma and family. (So. CA to LA to KY to MI and back to CA in a piece of shit ‘64 ford econline van). No motels unless there was a tornado warning. I remember my dad breaking down the tent in the rain in his swimsuit early in the morning; mom and 5 kids watching from the car. My dad is a hell of a man. Took me a while to realize that. Harvard Phd, nuclear scientist, family man, pretty good athlete and all around regular guy.
