There are actually some CT nuts who contend the Soviet Union never actually fell and it’s all just a ruse.

To an extent, they are not that far off. I was working there in 1992/93, just as things had fallen apart and there was complete chaos. We had some collagues who still retained their Communist Party cards.

I asked one colleague why they continued to associate with a party that had failed so disastrously. “We will prevail,” he answered.

Now with ex-KGB agent Putin in control, the situation is pretty much what a reformed USSR without the sattelite nations would have looked like.
