The thing though is the right always has people like this to try to make their message more palatable to people who aren’t in their base. Rubio tried being the “cool, hip” Republican by talking about how he likes rap and Tupac just as Ryan did with his Ratm fandom. The best phrase for guys like this is they’re an old person’s idea of a young person, I forgot who said it was but it was used on Rubio. Even Milo is wearing out his welcome with everyone but virulent racist shitbags.

Republicans always seem to have the strange, disconnected, Madison Ave. version of minority outreach. Newt is the dumb man’s impression of a genius. Ben is the old man’s impression of a millennial, Ryan is the ideologue’s impression of a wonk, Milo the homophobe’s impression of a gay man, etc.

They dabble in stereotypes and think that’s enough to get people on their side. The problem is that those demographics are almost never really their target. Their real target is the base who indulges in said stereotypes too and look for the ‘good ones’ to be the exception to the rule they have in their heads.
