Just like a few generations ago Republicans used to be better than Democrats on Civil Rights, they also used to be better on women’s rights.

The first woman ever to be elected to the Senate in her own name (not a widow filling her husband’s seat) was Margaret Chase Smith of Maine (also the first senator to stand up to Joe McCarthy). It was the Nixon admin that did Title IX and Title X, GHWB was hugely beneficial to Planned Parenthood, he’s the reason they got federal funding (back when unwanted pregnancies was more about dollars than religion, R’s thought contraception and/or abortion was a great way to save money at Medicare and Welfare). Gerald Ford was the most single greatest women’s-rights supporter of all the elected men of his generation).

How times change.

I think that really is what makes the GOP’s transformation into what it is today all the more pathetic.
