It’s they way they counter the idea that some people are a result of their past or a result of genetics or a combination. They desperately want psychology and cognitive science to be wrong and their gut feelings of ‘common sense’ to be a valid and absolute guide to reality.

The irony is staggering; these people are directly the products of their upbringing, often proudly so, and yet they decry the very concept in favor of a theory that says people MUST choose to be exactly the way they are. It’s like they think everyone EXCEPT them must’ve checked the “asshole” box on the character creation screen for the game of Real Life.
