Or Hurricane Sandy, or other natural disasters affecting a wide area (Bay Area Quake of 1989?).

Talk of looting is more reminiscent of the 1977 blackout in NYC than the 2005 blackout or other recent natural disasters. Most of the time, claims of looting are overblown, along with the concerns of same.

But it’s newsworthy (read: it bleeds) and so it gets attention, and everyone reinforces the attention talking about it. Suddenly it’s hordes of looters against which we all need to be armed.
