So while “debating” betseyross et al on twitter about MLK’s political affiliation I learned that it was “common knowledge” that MLK was a republican. The things you can learn on twitter (if you turn your brain off).

When I asked for his evidence, here was the response:

Even if MLK was a Republican, what would it prove? Before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, many southern African Americans were Republicans because the Republican party until that time really hadn’t pandered to white rage like they would later.Shit, it needs to be pointed out that the Republican/conservative hero of heroes Reagan thought so little of MLK that he only really signed the bill that established MLK Day because of a congressional veto and let’s not forget that right wing support for the Apartheid regime in South Africa.
