Not really out of any concern for the national welfare, of course. Goldwater and Buckley wanted a version of conservatism that had a thin veneer of civilization on it, the better to attract persuadables in the middle.

The job of racists etc., especially after the Southern strategy, was to vote GOP all quiet-like without getting any of their itches scratched.

That’s very true; I still think that what the GOP has devolved into, and in particular the Tea Party crowd, would’ve horrified both Buckley and Goldwater.
