Let’s not bring political calculation into it. There are important and still unsettled matters of principle here. What is the appropriate response to what behavior? It looks like we may have an extremely paradoxical situation, with Trump staying, possibly joined by Moore, and Franken going, accompanied by some much worse jerks. But let’s try to figure out what’s right and do it.
Also @ BBD: C’mon, drop it. It’s over. Franken is gone. Yes, I personally think that a reprimand rather than resignation was probably appropriate, but it’s over the top to characterize his resignation as a voluntary admission, given that it was called for by a majority of his colleagues in the party. Indeed, (1) as soon as accused (give or take an hour of shock) he asked for an Ethics enquiry, which he hasn’t had; (2) when he did resign, he reaffirmed his denials and his claims of misunderstanding.
