Does it matter? The vast majority of racism in this country isn’t purposeful, it operates at an ingrained, subconscious level within people allergic to introspection. Racism is a mimetically spread reflex, learned from and by people who sincerely believe they personally have “transcended race.”

Considering the repeated mentions of Dr. King in this thread, I would be remiss if I didn’t bring up his bitter derision of white moderates in his infamous “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” saying they did more to harm the Civil Rights movement than did white racists because they thought their well-meaning calls to “tone it down” was out of anything but a desire to get black folks to quiet down so society could return to business as usual.
