Though it was a “sudden” revelation to me one day when I drove up to the Santa Monica Mountains on a day of a low inversion, and saw the stark dividing line in the sky over the city: blue above, brown below: and then thinking: “Wow - we live down there and breathe THAT???”

I live in the heights of Champigny-sur-Marne and when I take the bus (to take the train, to take the metro) to work in Paris in summer I get to see the horrible grey brown soup I’ll be breathing for the rest of the day in the valley below me.

When I’m in it it’s invisible.
