I don’t see any problem with that piece. Bob Orr from CBS explicitly alluded to investigators’s statements:

Investigators say a quest for revenge seems to have played some role, but personal financial pressures may also have pushed Shahzad to act. He became a U.S. citizen just a year ago, but he has not realized any American dream. He quit his job, lost his house, and was separated from his family.

He lost his house because he borrowed against it to finance jihad. He quit is job so as to have time for jihad. He left his family…

The cause of all his misfortunes is his embrace of an extremist doctrine, and not vice-versa.
