I’m talking about the detail of the analysis too. This bit was funny but informative. It’s not merely that comedians call Trump out, its they can analyze a lot of complicated issues too. Oliver explained exactly why Trumps FP is a sham.

One of the things about the format for Last Week Tonight that lets it outdo even Daily Show is the fact that it doesn’t try to cover everything at once. It takes on a topic and deep dives, along with a secondary topic that doesn’t get quite the same amount of time, but still gets more than the brief ‘breaking news’ glance ‘real news’ gets. Not to mention one of the things this show, Daily Show, etc. get to do is use juxtaposition and video evidence to demonstrate why something is so wrong or absurd, making it easier to absorb than just an infodump.

Rachel Maddow does it almost every night.

Rachel is great but she’s an exception. I did say most. Rachel is brilliant. If the news media had more men and women like her, we would be in a better place.

Maddow does the same thing in general without the overt humor: it takes a topic and expands on it with little break until the topic is as fully explored as could be in the time allotted. It’s often the point of criticism against her too, that she supposedly takes 30 minutes to explain what could be explained in 3, or the like.
