Premature martyrdom is a symptom of the culture’s general position that anything that inconveniences them, or prompts self-reflection, is an attack.
I’ve had people go into the “you can’t stop me” high dudgeon when I pointed out the theological problems with their reading of Revelations from a Christian perspective. It was a way of bypassing that they couldn’t justify their beliefs with the texts their beliefs were based on.
It’s a defense mechanism for their spiritual naricissism: anything that happens to them is persecution, everything that happens to everyone else is somehow deserved.
