To be fair, the word ‘conservative’ today is by no means a code word for white supremacy any more than the word ‘progressive’ connotes anti semitism or the ‘Zionism is racism’ meme.

That said, there is no question that there has been a deliberate effort on the part of the religious right and racist right to blur the lines between their ideologies and true conservatism. The same can be said for real progressives and liberals. They are in a position now where they have to fend off the extremists and racists that are attempting to hijack those ideologies.

Time and time again we have seen conservatives and progressives get into bed with some very unsavory types for any number of reasons- usually the most self serving ones.
