I think Trump has a fear of boats, judging from one report about his yacht that he had to sell at a loss in his bankruptcy in the ’80s. It seems he took the yacht out on the waters off Atlantic City only once. The water was choppy, and Trump reportedly freaked out, convinced that the boat was going to sink any minute. So, he demanded the pilot take the yacht back to shore, and that’s where it stayed until some rich Arab dude bought.

Maybe standing on the Gerald Ford unsettled Trump.

Take this into consideration along with Merkel needing to hold his hand on the ramp at the White House…he’s got some kind of equilibrium thing happening.
